A partnership of several different organizations were brought together in a common project. When the project team started to work together they realized they could only use email and telephone to communicate. Soon there were lots of separate conversations going on and not a lot of co-ordination. Copying everyone into emails with different attachments didn’t seem to help much. There was confusion, lack of focus and the project started to miss its milestones.
It was then that the project set up its own virtual team space. Now everyone could communicate and share files in one central archive. Everyone was notified of changes, there was a central project plan accessible to everyone. Realtime communication involved everyone, information was up to date, and problems and issues were tracked until they were resolved.
To make this happen the whole team enrolled in a virtual team working programme, to learn about the skills and approaches that get the best out of the technology. The project now has its own web portal, allows everyone to contribute and is achieving its milestones.
